I’ve been working at the stand a lot, trying to hire a new person. It’s been slow going because I’m also speaking on Sunday, and no matter how much time I dedicate to preparing for that it doesn’t feel like enough. The usual amount of freelance work is eating up some time… you think you’re done with a drawing for somebody but that stuff keeps bouncing back with little changes. I did a book cover, a t-shirt, and a giant group caricature this week.
This strip was much, much faster to draw than last week’s, and I’m back on schedule. It’s funny… I’ll conceive of a strip that should be easy to draw and save me some time, then start working on it and realize that it’s going to take forever. Not the case with this one.
I’m excited to introduce this character. She’s been in my head for a long time. She’s partly modeled on a boss I once had, partly a mouthpiece for things I want to say, and partly an excuse to draw a pretty girl with a big nose. Maybe it’s because I’ve been a caricature artist for so long, and maybe it’s because my own nose is kind of big, but I see a lot of appeal in pretty girls with big noses.
